As we’re sure you’ve heard by now, Cairns has the honour of hosting part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games this April. The city has been busily preparing for months, and with only a handful of days left on the countdown, we thought it’d be the perfect time to break down the event and let you know what’s happening in Cairns during the event.
The Queen’s Baton relay passed through Cairns on Friday 16th March, and with the official Opening Ceremony on Wednesday 4th April, we have plenty to look forward to in the next few weeks. Keep reading to find out what’s on and where, and let us know what you’re most excited for.
Festival 2018
In celebration of the games, Cairns is hosting a 12 day arts and cultural festival to showcase our region and inspire locals and audiences alike.
The official opening night kicks off at the Cairns Esplanade on Wednesday 4th April. Enjoy a stellar line up of local acts, fireworks and a live stream of the Opening Ceremony on a big screen.
During the festival, there will be a collection of workshops, visual art shows, musical performances, dances, children’s events and much more. Catch some of Cairns’ best acts share the stage with the likes of Amy Shark and Kate Miller-Heidke.

Watch the Basketball Preliminary Rounds
Our state of the art Convention Centre is being put to great use this April, as it is the venue for the men’s and women’s Basketball preliminary rounds.
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see the world’s best athletes go head to head on our turf. Games are running from Thursday 5th April – Tuesday 10th April daily and will be worth every penny.
Food and beverages will be available at the events, so bring the whole family along to witness the deciding rounds.

Volunteering
Want to get involved in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games? Cairns has put together a City Meeting and Greeting team to interact with visitors and provide information and advice on our region.
There are also opportunities to volunteer at Festival 2018, as there is an array of artistic events that require volunteer help to run smoothly.
