Now that the rain has eased up (and hopefully gives us the break that the region desperately needs), it’s time to look ahead and start planning for dryer weekends ahead. And with the weather *slightly* cooling down, it’s the perfect excuse to dust off those hiking boots and explore our beautiful region on foot.
We’ve picked our top 5 bush walks in the Cairns area to give you some inspiration for the upcoming school holidays.
As always, we recommend doing your research before committing to a trip, and make sure you pack the necessary items to ensure you have a safe, sun protected walk in the wilderness.
Barron Falls Lookout
Wander through the treetops to see the mighty force that is Barron Falls. This walk is pleasant and along a pathway, with plenty of signs around to lead you to the destination.
Distance: 1.2km return
Nandroya Falls is definitely one of the hidden wonders of the Tablelands. Bring your togs and comfortable shoes, and of course, a camera. The path is paved, and you’ll be treated to a couple of small waterfalls along the way before reaching the breathtaking Nandroya Falls.
Distance: 2.2 km return
Time: 1hr – 1.5hrs
Mossman Gorge offers a variety of tracks and short walks for explorers. Maps are provided at entry to the centre, and for the full experience you can take the Rainforest Circuit Track that allows you to take in the surroundings at your own pace, and stop for a picnic along the way.
Time: 45min return
Whilst it can be a little tricky to get to, the walk to Behana Gorge is well and truly worth navigating. The trail is pathed; however, the rocks can be slippery after rainfall. Bring your togs and treat yourself to a mid-hike swim, or simply take a seat and breathe in your surroundings.
Time: 1.5hr return
Cape Tribulation – Emmagen Creek and Beach Walk
Make a day of it and explore the magical rainforest of Cape Tribulation. This walk is not for the faint hearted, as you’ll be subject to mosquitos and tailoring your trip around tide times. Just before Emmagen Creek you’ll find a footpath that leads to a freshwater swimming hole and dreamy beach.
Distance: 9km approx.
Time: 5hrs return trip
